The old miner Peter Strong's assay building now houses our museum. It is a small log structure used in the early 1900s for determining the amount of gold in ore samples from the mine.
This assay building and the nearby main cabin are listed as a National Historic Site. There's a display of old fashioned tools such as Peter Strong used to make for his woodworking and carpentry projects as well as mining.
Photos show the construction of the railroad, built when he lived here. Interpretive displays explain local geology and how the gold collects in the rocks.
More will be coming soon as we rebuild the collection after restoring the building.
So take a few minutes after gold panning to walk through some local Alaskan history.
